Spied images of the new Mahindra Scorpio Getaway in camouflage have been captured during its on-road testing. With the launch of the 2015 edition of the Scorpio SUV, it was evident that the new changes will be applied to the Getaway model.

Looking at the spy images, the new Getaway features the same front fascia of the new-gen Scorpio. The test vehicle also sports projector headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lamps, as seen on the current Scorpio. The alloy wheels used on the test vehicle are also from the previous generation Scorpio but are expected to be replaced with new ones for the production model. The above mentioned features will be offered in the higher variants of the Getaway. Most importantly, the new Getaway will have the new generation chassis of the new Scorpio providing better ride and handling characteristics.

The interiors of the test vehicle were not visible, but will mostly have the same configuration of the new Scorpio with minor changes. The top-end models are expected to have the dual-tone dashboard with the 6-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the centre console. GPS navigation will also mostly be provided in the top-of-the-line variant.

The new Mahindra Getaway will continue to be powered by the 2.6-litre 4-cylinder, turbocharged DI engine that registers output of 116PS of power at 3800 rpm and 227Nm of peak torque between 1700-2200 rpm. The engine will be mated to a five-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels, while the 4WD version will be available separately.

The new generation Scorpio Getaway is expected to be introduced in the market by end of 2016.

Triumph gave us a glimpse of the heavily updated 2016 Tiger Sport earlier in February. At the time the British motorcycle manufacturer just revealed it to come with a new 1,050cc triple-cylinder powerplant, the same one that also works force on the Speed Triple. The company has now released a detailed specification sheet.

The 2016 Triumph Tiger Sport makes peak power of 126 horses at 9,475rpm and maximum torque of 105.8Nm at 7,000rpm. To keep things exciting, this new Tiger Sport gets an improved mid-range of around 5 per cent while the torque too has gone up by 4 per cent.

The seat of the Tiger Sport sits 830mm above the ground, same as the Tiger XR and the XRx. The Tiger Sport tips the scale at 218kg. Thanks to a claimed efficiency figure of around 19 kilometres to a litre, the Tiger Sport gets a range of about 350km.

Other features on the 2016 Tiger Sport include ride-by-wire, riding modes, (rain, road and sport), traction control, cruise control, ABS and a slipper clutch. To keep it in sync with the Euro 4 norms, Triumph has also worked on the exhaust system and its combustion chamber. The Tiger Sport will also come with self-cancelling turn indicators and in sync with it touring capabilities, a power socket.

Features aside, the Tiger Sport’s beauty is in its versatility. With an improved engine that flaunts a stronger mid-range and features that will aid its off-road ability, the Tiger Sport is a genuine all-rounder.

Triumph will launch the Tiger Sport in the UK later this month at £10,300 (Rs 9.74 lakh) and it will make its way to India soon. Positioned between the Tiger 800 and the top-end Tiger Explorer, expect the Tiger Sport to be priced around Rs 15 lakh mark.

1. Getting the basics right

First things first. During the 15-day phase of the car rationing scheme, cars with even number license plates would be allowed to ply on even dates while odd numbered cars can only be taken out on odd dates.

The notification shall come into force with effect from April 15, 2016 and will remain in force till April 30, 2016. It would be effective from Monday to Saturday, between 8am and 8pm.

The number of offenders on the first day of the odd-even pilot was alarmingly high but it gradually came down as the scheme progressed. And this time too, the Delhi government is in no mood to go soft on the wrongdoers. Violation of odd-even rules will levy a fine of Rs 2,000 in accordance with the provisions of sub-section (1) of section 194 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal recently announced the list of vehicles that will be exempted from the second phase of the odd-even scheme. Apart from two-wheelers, women drivers, CNG-operated vehicles, ambulances, chief ministers of states and vehicles carrying students in uniform will also fall outside the ambit of the restrictions. Notably though, he said that the state’s chief minister and other ministers would not be exempted from odd-even restrictions.

The enhancement of public transport facilities in the state was a demand raised by majority of Delhites once the odd-even debate surfaced. Addressing it, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have geared up to tackle any extra rush as commuters turn to public conveyance during the period. The Delhi Metro will increase its trips to 3,248 per day and add 30 coaches while DTC will operate additional buses on 346 routes, including better connectivity between Gurgaon and Noida.

Apart from ramping up public transport facilities during the odd-even period, the Delhi government has also taken the e-route to reach out to people. It recently launched the ‘PoochhO Carpool’ app, which will help people explore carpooling options during the 15-day exercise. After downloading it, users will have to register themselves to find carpooling options within a radius of 1km-5km.

Apart from the Delhi government’s carpooling app, various other service providers and car aggregators will also offer multiple solutions during the course of the car rationing scheme.

Odd Even Ride: This free Android app lets you find people nearby you can carpool with. You just have to enter your car and phone number, and then you get a list of all the other people who are on a similar route, with similar timings

Helpchat: By using the cab feature on Helpchat, one can plan, search for various commuting options and go for the best one, avoiding price surge during peak commuting hours. Helpchat, a personal assistant app will also help you with its feature of air quality check in your locality.

Orahi: This carpooling app offers deals such as ‘Every second ride free’ and ‘1 litre of free petrol for car owners everyday’ for new users.

OlaShare/UberPool: These popular car aggregators offer you the option to share your cab ride with other people on your route, at around half the usual price.

Bike booking app Rapido has offered to provide last mile connectivity to select Delhi Metro stations free of cost during the second phase of the odd-even scheme. As a promotional activity, the company will be offering free rides from 8am to 9pm that can be hired in and around 5 km of Malviya Nagar and Hauz Khas metro stations.

Audi could have probably pulled off the father of all customisations with its recent project. Upon receiving a request from a European customer, the brand with four rings has built a first one-off version of the Audi A8 sedan in king-size format, informed a press release. Furthermore, Audi already has more requests for the concept.

The new Audi A8 L extended offers top-class comfort across its 6.36m length and the wheelbase spanning 4.22m. The representative XXL sedan offers 1.09m more wheelbase and overall length than the Audi A8. To maintain a harmonious roof line, the entire body from the A-pillar back has been reworked.

All passengers face the direction of travel in the Audi A8 L extended. The six seats are upholstered in extra-supple Valcona leather, in the colour velvet beige. Rows two and three feature electrically adjustable individual seats. The third row has a continuous centre console, a Rear Seat Entertainment display and a cool box.

During almost a year of developing and building this extraordinarily long sedan, the major challenges concerned the safety and rigidity of its extra-large body. The Audi A8 L extended benefits from the low weight of the production model’s body, which uses an Audi Space Frame design and is made almost entirely from aluminium.

For the built-to-order version the engineers extended the side sills and centre tunnel using extruded aluminium sections. Inside the tunnel, these also assist with the air routing. A double rear bulkhead separates the passenger compartment from the luggage compartment; the roof incorporates additional aluminium profiled tubes and cross-braces, the release added.

Under the hood, the one-off A8 version is powered by a 3.0 TFSI engine that is good for 314.3PS of power and 440 Nm of torque. It is mated to an eight-speed tiptronic that transfers engine power to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system.

Ford India inaugurates first Technical Training Centre at Manesar

Ford India have inaugurated their first Technical Training Centre at Manesar in Gurgaon in a bid to create a pool of trained and well organized technicians. The facility has been established in partnership with Technical Training Inc and is spread over a total area of 18,000sqft. The facility has a total capacity of 13,500 training days per year. As a part of the training program, trainees will be inducted on Ford’s current and forthcoming product portfolio to cater to customer requirements. The learning programs and techniques will be conducted in digitally computerized classrooms.

Speaking on the occasion, Anurag Mehrotra, Executive Director, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford India said, “This new state-of-the-art facility is a testimony to our commitment towards ensuring a skilled work force, qualified with the right certifications to deal with Ford products and more.”

“Our vision is to establish independent technical centres with ultra-modern facilities including body shop training in all four regions and this centre is our first step towards it. Our innovative service initiatives strengthened by a highly trained technical workforce will further play a pivotal role in ensuring a long-lasting relationship with the customer”, he added

Ford India currently has six training centres in India in Chennai, Chennai, Cochin, Kolhapur, Ahmedabad, Mohali and Kolkata.

Bentley Bentayga luxury SUV to be launched in India on 21 April

When news first broke out that VW-owned British luxury marquee Bentley would be coming up with its very own luxury SUV, it took few by surprise. The ultra-luxury SUV space, once dominated by just a handful of players, is now a heavily coveted segment for some of the world’s top brands, including Maserati, Jaguar, Aston Martin, and Lamborghini. Even Rolls-Royce, the venerable doyen of the automotive world, is testing the waters with its “Project Cullinan.” Therefore, it only makes sense for the Bentayga.

And it is being launched in India on 21st of April. As you’d expect with a car of this caliber, the Bentayga will be nowhere near the “affordable” mark, with a starting price of around Rs 3.8 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi). Yes, that is pretty much what you’d expect to fork out for a Rolls-Royce Ghost here in the country. And that is before you factor in the mile-long options list, with staggeringly pricey tick boxes like the Mulliner Tourbillon clock, yours for the princely sum of $160,000 in the US.

That said, the Bentley Bentayga really does have what it takes to justify its Ghost-rivalling price tag. Bentley makes no bones about its capabilities, putting it forth quite bluntly as the “fastest and most powerful SUV in the world.” That is a huge claim for a luxury barge that, while based on the same VW Group full-size SUV architecture as the Audi Q7 and next-gen Porsche Cayenne, is also longer, wider, and heavier than both.

This ferocious power comes from a brand new twin-turbo W12 engine, with 600 horsepower and a whooping 900 Nm of torque. Paired with an eight-speed transmission and an automatic all-wheel drive system, it will propel the Bentayga to 100 kmph in four seconds flat and on to a top speed of 300 kmph. So yes, the Bentayga does comfortably lay claim to the title of the fastest production SUV in the world.

But if you’re thinking that very few of these Bentaygas will ever be driven in anger by their owners, you’d be right. It is the luxury and creature comforts inside that count here, and Bentley hasn’t skimped on anything. Four cows gave their lives in the creation of every Bentayga leather interior, and there are 15 separate pieces of veneer, mineral glass gauge covers, milled aluminum accents and tolerances measured in tenths of a millimeter.

Buyers can spec the Bentayga with either four or five seats. Five means a folding rear bench, while four puts two buckets in back — identical to the standard 18-adjustment front seats and separated by a console, with a diamond-stitched leather partition in front of the cargo area. Both configurations come with a touch pad for rear climate and infotainment adjustments. It can be removed from the back of the front console and held on the lap so there’s no need to lean forward to adjust temperature or fan speed.

There are also 12 exterior ultrasonic sensors, five cameras with a composite top view, long-and short-distance radar, traffic sign recognition, night vision, head-up display and park assist — which works with a trailer attached. The Android tablets delivering rear-seat video can be removed from behind the front headrests for full computer functionality. There’s a 60-gig onboard hard-drive and three audio systems, from the standard 700 watts to the 1,800-watt Naim.

So if you’ve been looking for the perfect ultra-luxury SUV to scare those pesky plebeians off the road, and be swathed in comfort while doing it, the Bentley Bentayga is the perfect choice for you. Just keep it out of sight of the tax department.

Suzuki Gixxer new variant coming on April 15th

Suzuki Motorcycles India unveiled a new Gixxer variant at this year’s Auto Expo and now the time for the said variant’s launch is at hand. Suzuki is gearing up to launch the new variant on 15th April. The new Gixxer variant will now sport a rear 240mm disc brake with single floating caliper to enhance the braking efficiency of an already capable motorcycle. Aesthetically, the bike looks identical to the current motorcycle but will feature new colour schemes and clear turn indicators similar to the ones on the Gixxer SF.

The bike will still be powered by the same 155cc, air-cooled single-cylinder carburetted engine making 14.8PS of max power at 8,000rpm and 14Nm of peak torque at 6,000rpm. The engine is mated to a five-speed gearbox. The engine is equipped with Suzuki Eco Performance (SEP) technology, which, the company says reduces mechanical losses and maximises combustion, leading to fuel economy figures of 63.2kmpl. Expect the new variant to be priced Rs 7,000-10,000 over the current Gixxer variants.

Yamaha to launch a new model on April 14th 2016

Yamaha has had a bit of a rocky journey in the Indian market. It all started with a bang when the Japanese bike maker brought the RD and the RX series to India. In the nineties too there were some bikes that were quite revered among the Indian riders. But near the dawn of the 21st century Yamaha kind of lost the plot and sales figures fell like a rock in a pond. Then again in 2009 Yamaha made their presence felt again with the launch of the YZF-R15 and the FZ series of bikes. Then the company forayed into scooters with the Ray followed by the Alpha. And so far the journey has been a bit rocky, again. The foray into scooters though garnered a decent initial response from the market but soon ran out of steam. Same was the case with the Alpha. So in an attempt to rekindle its romance with the Indian market, Yamaha recently launched the YZF-R3 and come tomorrow they are planning to add one more model to their product portfolio.

The details of the launch are yet unclear but we’ve been assured that it will be ‘special’ press conference and a product launch. Our guess is that the chances of the Ray ZR being launched are quite high. The company first showed the scooter at the 2016 Auto Expo. The Ray ZR is basically a facelift version of the Ray Z. It retains the 113cc BLUE CORE engine and the changes are purely cosmetic. It sports new graphics and colour schemes along with a redesigned instrument cluster and a new redesigned headlamp assembly as well. Yamaha had also announced that the Ray ZR when launched will also be offered with cast aluminium wheels with a front disc brake. Initially, the scooter was planned to be launched in March but due to technical reasons the date was shifted to tomorrow, April 14th. The ZR will probably replace the recently discontinued Ray scooter.

However, the possibility of a 110cc commuter motorcycle also cannot be ruled out as that is the only thing Yamaha doesn’t yet have in its commuter lineup with the Saluto being the smallst commuter at 125cc capacity. It is possible that the company might revive the 106cc single cylinder engine that used to power the old Crux. The engine makes close to 8PS of max power and about 7Nm of peak torque. Although, if launched Yamaha would be looking to play the fuel economy card right. Whatever the case is, we’ll find out soon enough. So stay tuned.

Datsun Redi-GO Global Unveil: What to expect

We have spoken time and again about how Datsun in India have got on to an unexpectedly poor start in India. That said, there is a saying that goes ‘third time’s a charm’ and Datsun will be hoping for exactly the same with their brand new entry level hatchback, the Redi-GO that will have it’s global unveil in India on April 14. This is not the first time Datsun is doing a global unveil in India though as they also showcased the Go hatchback (which was the Japanese brand’s first new car in nearly three decades) to the world for the first time a few years ago in India.

Sadly, despite being a decent car in terms of dynamics along with having a lot of space on the interior front, the Go did not sell as well as expected. And neither did the Go+, which was essentially a longer version of the Go. So what should we expect from the Redi-GO? Well, read on..

Let us talk about design first. The Redi-Go is a complete departure from the Datsun designs we have seen so far. For starters, Datsun has ditched the conventional hatchback module and switched to a tall boy design that seems to be quite popular with first time car buyers in larger cities like Mumbai and Delhi. That said, there is still a familiarity to design with the large trapezoidal grille that dominates the front. The headlamps are stretched out and much slimmer than the ones in the past. Although not certain, the Redi-GO could feature a set of daytime running lights too.

There is also a very distinctive design that runs along the side of the car and runs all the way up to the tail lamps giving it a very unique silhouette. This line also accentuates the rear wheel arhces making the car appear to be much wider. The tail is well designed with a set of medium sized and simple tail lamps that flank the well ridged and high hatchback opening. Hopefully, the Redi-Go will also feature a set of alloy wheels that are absent in both the other Datsun cars.

In terms of interiors, although there are no real pictures or details yet, we hope Datsun takes the exact opposite approach as they have taken to the Go and Go+. By this we mean that Datsun has to start giving a well equipped interior with features like a proper infotainment system, Bluetooth and if possible, even a touchscreen setup with navigation in the top of the line variants. That said, one thing is for certain. The Redi-Go is going to be a quite spacious on the inside considering the fact that it is based on the same CMF-A platform that also underpins the Renault Kwid and the fact that all Datsuns offer a great amount of space on the inside both in terms of rear leg space and in terms of boot space.

So what about engines? Well, for now, the Redi-GO should get the 800cc engine that the Kwid gets with a 1.0-litre variant and an AMT gearbox just around the corner. The 800cc engine makes a modest 54PS and 72Nm of peak power and torque respectively and considering the fact that the Redi-GO will be aimed as a thoroughbred city car, we think that should be enough power to get a move on. In terms of fuel economy expect the Redi-GO efficiency to be around the 26kmpl mark.

And so we come to pricing. Representatives of Datsun and Nissan including top boss Carlos Goshn has admitted that the fact that Renault India could pull off the Rs 2.6-3.6 lakh pricepoint on the Kwid came as quite a surprise. Do we expect the Datsun to be priced even lower? Honestly, we doubt. So considering the reality of things, we expect the Redi-GO to be priced just slightly higher at between Rs 3.0-4.0 lakh. That said, the car will not be officially launched tomorrow but instead will be launched at a separate event a few months down the line and we will definitely have more details by then when it comes to positioning and pricing.
